The history of the art groups in Galveston must recognize the efforts of Mrs. Marie Kimball, a pioneer of the city’s art world. She formed the earliest group of Galveston art lovers. However no permanent organization functioned until the present Galveston Art League was founded on June 12, 1914. The group was composed of Mrs. I.H. Kempner, Mrs. Boyer Gonzales, Miss Frances Kirk, Miss Hattie Wittig, Miss Angela McDonald, Mrs. W. F. Beers and Miss Alice Black. Throughout its years of existence, the Galveston Art League has continued to promote the goals and purposes set forth in the League's first constitution:
• To foster worthwhile art in the schools and homes of the city
• To solicit the cooperation of public and private groups in support of art
• To encourage the artist of the city and state
• To hold exhibitions
The Art league continues to:
• Welcome visiting artists
• Sponsor art instruction by well known artist
• Present their works in exhibition
• Introduce artists to Galvestonians in open-house receptions
• Bring art shows to the island
• Present outstanding lectures at regular meetings
• Organize art functions
In 1968 the American Bank of Galveston made available its mezzanine as a permanent gallery space for the use of the Art League, making possible continuous membership exhibition, “featured artists” and annual student art exhibits and state circuit shows.
When the new wing of the Rosenberg Library opened in 1972, exhibits of the Art League were held there. Through the Rosenberg Library's generosity, The Galveston Art League, Gallery was opened on April 24, 1974, with a special juried show of the artists from the Galveston area. Such a show was to be an annual event.
A permanent Art League collection at Rosenberg Library contains the work of many nationally known painters, such as Eugene Speicher, Boyer Gonzales, Paul Schumann, Fredric Taubes, and Percy Holt.
The Galveston Art League was incorporated on February 26, 1968 and continued its operations at the Rosenberg Library, having several exhibitions each year. Building on its rich foundation, in 2003, the Board of Directors determined that a building fund should be established with the intent to work toward getting a “home” of its own. In April, 2004, the GAL moved into leased space at 2117A Postoffice Street. In January 2008, the gallery space was purchased.
Since 2004, the League has been able to meet the mission established by the founding members. GAL holds workshops, children’s exhibitions, membership meetings, three juried exhibitions are held annually and members’ art is for viewing and sale continuously.
In September of 2008, the gallery suffered a total loss when Hurricane IKE scored a direct hit on Galveston Island and nearly eight feet of flood water inundated the gallery. The Board decided to rebuild the gallery and beginning in March of 2009, the space was completely remodeled with a loft area for our offices to protect valuable records from flooding.
The Galveston Art League continues to support the philosophy of the National Endowment for the Arts, “A great Nation Deserves Great Art” and works to bring that philosophy to the community.
